Great app - HUGE potential
This is a 5 star app in the making.
The Pros:
Seamless integration with FCP X
As advertised it replaces Dropbox for file sharing, Vimeo for review links, and email for notes (if you can educate clients to embrace it)
The side-by-side feature is incredible, especially to compare grades
Can rerrange videos manually
Can group videos into folders to keep versions together (unlike Vimeo)
Sharing multiple videos infinitely faster than Vimeo’s portfolio page (or collections as it’s called now)
The Cons:
Client eductaion - would be great to have a white paper or video specifically for clients who may not be as tech savvy to explain how the service works and the tools available to them, preferably when they sign in for the first time.
Can only export one video at a time using FCP X’s share menu. Initiaiting a second generates an error to wait until the first one finishes. Being you can drag and drop multiple files into the web app, it should allow for queuing through FCP X.
This one’s more of a preference, but I’d prefer a ‘PUBLISH’ button on the web app to notifiy collaborators a new video(s) have been uploaded, to prevent them from being notified before you’ve uploaded all versions if there are, or before you can write a note explaining what they’re about to see.
Recommendations:
Allow clients to make notes on videos sent using the share link
Allow selectable frame size when exporting from FCP X (for example, to make an 1920x1080 HD H.264 from a 4k timeline to expedite upload)
User defined video thumbnails
Export multiple videos simultaneously within FCP X
“Publish” button on the app to push a notification to collaborators new media has been added.
Conclusion:
Kudos to Emery and his team for creating a smart, simple solution to an integral part of post production workflow. Even in it’s infancy it’s feature set is incredibly powerful and exhibits major advantages to current workflows. With a few updates this app will be a must-have for professionals and production companies. Look forward to wathing it mature!
