Frame.io - Video Collaboration App Reviews

Great Potential

I’m new to using this app, but I think it’s definitely going in the right direction. After loading two project though, I reached the limit of my free usage. I would like to have more time to use the app before commiting to monthly payments. I recommend a 30 day trail for new people. Thanks for the work.

Great App, Excited to see where it goes from here!

Love this app! and frame.io Been waiting a long time for any form of collaborative integration in FCP X. Excited to see how this develops. It will be great to send a complete library bundle to another editor/Team Member at some point and have it automatically populate their FCP Library and remain syncronized when new media is added or project sequences updated..sort of a checkout/check in system. I could see that happening…

Works great

This is a wonderful application, it really improves your workflow.

Great concept but….

Unfortunately, after deleteing and installing several times the companion app, it still crashes upon startup (OS X Yosemite), so I have not been able to use it. The “Support” link on the page only has FAQ’s and a database that provides no solutions for this problem. There’s no link on their site to contact them with a specific problem. Very disappointed. I will update the rating if the problem is solved.

Filled a major need in approval workflow.

nailed it. super clean and intuitive. now just having to upgrade to Pro from Starter. I thought i’d test it out with a pro bono project; now I’m funnelling all my clients through it. there are a couple features I’d like to see, but for how good this is out of the gate, it’s definitely worth 5 stars.

Great app - HUGE potential

This is a 5 star app in the making. The Pros: Seamless integration with FCP X As advertised it replaces Dropbox for file sharing, Vimeo for review links, and email for notes (if you can educate clients to embrace it) The side-by-side feature is incredible, especially to compare grades Can rerrange videos manually Can group videos into folders to keep versions together (unlike Vimeo) Sharing multiple videos infinitely faster than Vimeo’s portfolio page (or collections as it’s called now) The Cons: Client eductaion - would be great to have a white paper or video specifically for clients who may not be as tech savvy to explain how the service works and the tools available to them, preferably when they sign in for the first time. Can only export one video at a time using FCP X’s share menu. Initiaiting a second generates an error to wait until the first one finishes. Being you can drag and drop multiple files into the web app, it should allow for queuing through FCP X. This one’s more of a preference, but I’d prefer a ‘PUBLISH’ button on the web app to notifiy collaborators a new video(s) have been uploaded, to prevent them from being notified before you’ve uploaded all versions if there are, or before you can write a note explaining what they’re about to see. Recommendations: Allow clients to make notes on videos sent using the share link Allow selectable frame size when exporting from FCP X (for example, to make an 1920x1080 HD H.264 from a 4k timeline to expedite upload) User defined video thumbnails Export multiple videos simultaneously within FCP X “Publish” button on the app to push a notification to collaborators new media has been added. Conclusion: Kudos to Emery and his team for creating a smart, simple solution to an integral part of post production workflow. Even in it’s infancy it’s feature set is incredibly powerful and exhibits major advantages to current workflows. With a few updates this app will be a must-have for professionals and production companies. Look forward to wathing it mature!

The price halts me.

The concept is great. Just read the 5-star reviews to see how good. Great job, Frame.io! The price is too steep for what I use Final Cut for. The free version gives you 2gb of total storage. After that, you pay. Here are the other prices: 10gb: $15/month 50gb: $25/month 100gb: $50/month 400gb: $150/month If you pay yearly, you get 10% off. If I did this for a living, I could probably justify it. As it is, this app will unfortunately collect dust for me.

Best in class.

I can now export a project, then upload for review at the same time. No need to wait for the export, then upload to wherever, then email client to review. If your clients are on as collaborators, they can also be notified when it gets uploaded. The client review process is amazing! Make sure if they have a PC to get a Mac. In the meantime, they can use Chrome for review and note taking. Also, don’t forget that files can also be uploaded. I worked with a client of mine on subtitles and we were able to share the text file through frame.io. Along with sending the complete timeline, Frame.io does something extra special. You can set markers on clips you want to export and it will export just those clips in the timeline- not the source file. That is great for sending clips out for graphics, etc. Also- do not place the share settings in a bundle, the upload does not work if you do. Great Great Great!

Good Sharing Platform

Frame.io provides an excellent sharing platform. The UI still needs a little work to be fully production-quality, in my opinion, but the web interface is very nice. It beats other cloud sharing platforms hands-down. The developers are also very responsive. The only reason I’m not giving this 5 stars is that the UI currently doesn’t support uploading directly to subfolders in a project, nor did the installer successfully integrate the export profile into Final Cut X for me. The developers did, however, quickly point me to instructions to manually create the export profile manually, so I’m able to fully utilize the application. Neither one of these issues is enough for me not to fully recommend the app. It’s pretty cool. The ability to add frame-specific comments on the videos is awesome.

How did I live without this before?

What an amazing tool! The collaboration aspect, feedback control, versioning, SPEED, and more of Frame.io is the best I’ve seen. The guys that started it are clearly committed to having the best tool out there for this and it shows. They seem to constantly be iterating and truly listening to the feedback of the crowd. Outside of my personal work, I work in a corporate environment passing a LOT of videos and versions through many levels of feedback and review—Frame.io has streamlined this process to the point where I can be much more efficient with my editing time and don’t have any communication breakdowns. In the last year I moved away from FCPX back to Premiere Pro after many years editing with earlier versions of FCP, but my last big corporate project I edited in FCPX specifcailly to test the Frame.io integration and it did not disappoint. I can only hope that someday there may be a Premiere Pro integration?? :). In the meantime I can always just export and upload via the web app! Well done, guys! Keep up the great work!

fantastic

super easy to use. fast. wonderful. online app could use better commenting but besides that a great experience. their online support is top notch as well.

Great App

This app is great. Does exactly what it says. It has saved me time and has eased the hassle of collaborating.

Amazing

Seriously. This app takes a lot of time out of the review process. It’s riduculously simple to use, and stupid fast. It’s a no brainer for anyone using FCPX.

Easy and fun

Great UI for collaborators which make it easier and faster to get them to do their reviews.

A Must Have

This app is a must have for anyone working with clients! Theyll appreciate you more as a professional, and will make everybody’s lives easier. Customer service/support is awesome! They reply within minutes! The team is working on improvements and without a doubt things will only get better. Thanks guys!

This. Is. Amazing.

I shocked at how awesome this app works. Seamless integration with their service… Thank you

Took a while to sink in, but now an essential

I was initially skeptical and kinda pushed it to the back of my mind — continuing to laboriously upload to Vimeo; prepare the embed code; take that code back to my Squarespace site; create the video embed object; paste the code; tweak; copy the link for clients and then send an email. ALL THAT just so they can view it. Then I found myself with an hour or two to look into frame_io. First, the ability to share to it direct from the FCPX timeline means it’s as viable as Vimeo, so that’s one stage substituted. Then, to be able to create meaningful projects and sub-projects as destinations is invaluable. Starting to make sense. THEN, to choose who can view vs who cannot view on a per item basis; to have them be able to share or not, but MOST OF ALL, to give clients the on-screen ability to stop the video; mark up a frame or clip with annotations, text, arrows, highlights… unreal. Suddenly my entire, laborious, clumsy process was replaced 100%. The clients love it. I love it. AND NO MORE EMAIL CRITIQUE THREADS! It all happens in one, streamlined space, which I can only assume will get better and better. So hats off and five stars. If you’re working with video for clients, it’s an absolute no-brainer.

Very good tool, but lots of room for improvement.

Overall Frame.io has done a great job cracking the code on video feedback w/ annotations and versioning. However there is lots of room for improvement, the Image experience (collaborating on a still, not video) of Frame.io seems like and after though, and it would be nice if it either integrated with other cloud services like Dropbox, or it offered a similar cloud computing experience. I feel like I went back in time with all the uploading and downloading you have to do with Frame.io, not to mention what happens when I have no internet service? Clients or collaborators cant access anything with the way their “cloud service” is set up. Anyways, the potential of Frame.io seems very promising, this could be a HUGE tool for virtual collaboration which is obviously where things are heading.

Time saver

Fast, stable and easy to use. If you use frame.io then this companion app is essential.

Fantastic … Improves communications and saves time!

This app is amazing. It helps avoid miscommunications. All the notes are in one place, edit versions are all there. Being able to visually anotate on a frame, to circle and/or draw arrows to areas you’re talking about, speeds up the communication process. Uploading video files and projects from FCPX is simple. My clients have taken to Frames.io very quickly. Not only does it save my time, it saves my clients time … that makes me look good.
